HIGH EXPECTATIONS: Najib outlines his vision and mission in a two-hour closed-door meeting with cabinet members

KUALA LUMPUR: JUST hours after his cabinet was sworn in yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak immediately got  down to mapping the way forward to execute his promise to drive the National Transformation Programme.

In a two-hour session with his new ministers at the Cabinet Room in Putrajaya yesterday, Najib shared with them his vision and mission to bring about the changes.

Just hours earlier yesterday, Muhyiddin led the ministers and deputy ministers, garbed  in either the national costume or dark suits, in the swearing-in ceremony before  Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah at  Istana Negara.

Muhyiddin was the first to take his oath of office and allegiance at 10.10am, and then signed the official document of appointment before Chief Justice Tun Arifin Zakaria and the Chief Secretary to the Government Datuk Seri Dr Ali Hamsa.

Najib said the cabinet members must "add value" to their services by engaging the public in public forums, face-to-face sessions and even social or traditional media.

The PM also advised his ministers to work as a team.

"Whatever we do, it must be in the name of the government; we do not move in compartments or our respective silos," he was quoted as saying by Bernama.

"I want to make it clear that we are a strong and well-coordinated team both locally and abroad, whether we are talking to the local or international media."

He said transparency in the administration was also crucial as this had been exploited and exaggerated by the opposition.

The opposition, he said, were biw aware of how "perception could overcome reality". As such, he wants members of the administration to respond quickly to and be more assertive on issues raised by the opposition.

Surprise inclusions were Maybank president and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar and Transparency International Malaysia president Datuk Paul Low Seng Kwan as ministers in the Prime Minister's Department.

He also advised his ministers to be prepared to come under intense public scrutiny.

"It means the people have high expectations of us and how we our behave, whether it's us personally or our family members. As such, we must be aware of what we are doing, how we carry ourselves and our way of life so that the people will not question anything involving our integrity as a member of the administration."

Najib expressed confidence in the new cabinet's enthusiasm and readiness to carry out its duties. "God willing, we will do our best to fulfil all pledges made to the people."

However, the new cabinet is still bereft of any representatives from MCA and Gerakan, as the former is holding fast to its decision not to accept any state and federal posts after its dismal showing in the polls.

MCA secretary-general Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha nevertheless believed Najib was still holding out for an MCA representative, and that it was possible to overturn the previous decision if "someone initiates the change". Additional reporting by Sukhbir Cheema
