PRU13: Sunday, April 21, 2013

PEKAN : The government has always strive to change the living standards of the rakyat, regardless of where they live, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today.

The rakyat, whether they are in the rural or urban areas, must all be able to benefit from the country's progress, he said.

Najib said this at the launch of the government's poverty eradication project in Pekan.

He said participants of this project will see their income increased to between RM3,000 and RM5,000 monthly by 2020.

He said since the launch of the project in 2009, they families which used to earn an average RM500 montly, now get over RM1,000.

The Pekan Agropolitan project, implemented by the East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC) has transformed the lives of 415 poor families, he said.

The project's third site in Tanjung Batu involved the participation of 213 families, who were selected among the hardcore poor in the Pekan district.

The first two were launched in 2009 and 2011 which focused on Dorper sheep rearing as their primary economic activity while the Tanjung Batu project is on oil palm plantation.

Najib said the Tanjung Batu families had since October moved into their new homes built by ECERDC and are currently working at a 1,352ha oil palm plantation.

He said another 100 Orang Asli families would be selected to take part in another project in Pekan.

Later, Najib visited BN operations centre at Nenasi polling district (PDM) here and centres in Tanjung Batu, Merchong, Landai and Sungai Miang.

He also advised the voters to be wary of lies that could divide them.

"We must be united as a team against the lies being spread around to distract  us. We must also show that Pekan is a formidable BN stronghold," he said.

His arrival was greeted by enthusiastic BN workers and voters who also shouted "Hidup BN, hidup Najib" (long live BN, long live Najib).
